Raymond L. Newkirk, enjoys an extensive entrepreneurial background and is a successful executive having served companies in diverse industries. He is the Founder and Chief Executive of the Systems Management Institute (www.smilc.com), The Newkirk Group and R.L. Newkirk Publications (www.smilc.info). He was the Founder of Bay University, a Virtual-Learning education and training company, and The Newkirk Group, a Leadership Development consultancy. He was a Senior Fellow of the Monterey Bay Management Group. Ray has served as President and Chief Operating Officer of P.Q. Information Group, b.v. the Netherlands, President of the International Association of Information Management, and Chief Operating Officer of Mindmaker, Inc., an artificial intelligence company.
Ray is a prolific writer having authored 19 books, 44 Ebooks, 25 monographs, and more than 300 articles ranging from Project Management and Leadership to Applied Spirituality and Management Psychology. His most recently published book, Leading by Design, is currently available through Booklocker and Amazon. Previously, his Beyond the Year 2000 Crisis won the Winston Churchill Medal for its advancement of business wisdom. Ray has just completed the first draft of his next book about taking the myth out of leadership thinking and management practice He is also about to publish eight more ebooks in management practice and applied performance psychology. Ray is the recipient of the International Order of Merit and is an Eminent Churchill Fellow of the Winston Churchill Medal of Wisdom Society.
Ray consults in strategic management, program and project management, enterprise architecture design, virtual commerce, and human activity systems design. He advocates the use of Information Technology to empower strategic action. His professional background in competitive leverage, industrial innovation and technological versatility includes a distinguished career in education, manufacturing, management, consulting, research, speaking, executive development, and writing. He coaches in the growth of the four core softskills of professional success: mobilizing innovation and change, managing others and tasks, managing self, and communicating. Ray's vision of executive management as an Evolutionary Guidance System is gaining broad acceptance after more than 19 years of development. Through the course of his career, Ray has served as a computer operator, computer programmer, systems analysis, systems designer, project manager, program manager, Supervisor of Systems Integration, Manager of Q.A., salesperson, commodities/investments broker, Director of MIS, ADP Department Head, VP of Marketing, VP of Sales, VP of HRM, Chief Operating Officer, President, Chief Executive Officer, Company Founder, Partner, Chairman of the Board, Consultant, Consulting Specialist, and everything in between.
In addition to presenting seminars for Systems Management Institute, Ray speaks throughout the globe on educational, technical, and management issues. Working at the highest levels of business and government, Ray led significant Information Technology programs in the Middle East and the Far East. He also completed significant engagements in the U.S. for Security Pacific Bank (now Bank of America) and Dell Computers where his programs contributed to Dell's impressive growth in revenues over the following several years.
Ray has presented the Keynotes to audiences around the world. On his visits to Europe, the press frequently interviewed Ray to gain insights on emerging trends in technology and leadership. Peers view Ray as an innovative thinker who challenges the leading edge of thought in several disciplines. Readers respect his articles and continue to popularize them. They see Ray as a visionary thinker although ahead of his time, still grounded in the present.
The driving force behind Ray's vision of 21st Century education and growth is: "mindfulness through design, competence through commitment, and facilitation through technology". Ray authored 15 courses for the E-Learning Program of Systems Management Institute (SMI) and authored Bay University's Virtual Commerce newsletter. He is the developer of the SMI curriculum and the designer of SMI's practice-based model termed the Internet Assistant Action Learning (IAAL) approach to course design.
Earlier, Ray was Founder and President of the Society for Career Design, a professional organization chartered to assist individuals in developing their careers. He was also President of Attorneys Trust Services, a company founded to provide asset protection to individuals and families, and Founder of N&B Engineering Associates, a company designed to provide PC software and support to engineering and Information Technology groups. He was the Co-Founder and President of Advanced Information Group (AIG), a company dedicated to human capital acquisition and the dissemination of information and knowledge that advances the expansion of strategic management education.
In 1992, the Chairman of the CNN World Business Development Congress invited Ray as a VIP Priority Guest to discuss problems associated with implementing emerging technologies in the Third World. Prior to that, in 1991 the scientific advisor of the National Academy of Sciences invited Ray to participate as a visiting Ambassador in Business Development and Educational Technology Transfer to the Soviet Union. He has been invited to participate in other global development conferences in Cairo, Egypt and Oxford, England. In 1985, he became a Fellow of the British Institute of Management. In 1989 the Bush Administration invited Ray to serve as an adviser in Information Systems to the Department of Energy. In 1995 the Board of Governors of the American Biographical Institute honored Ray with an appointment as Lifetime Deputy Governor. In 1998, the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England recognized Ray as one of the "2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century".
Ray has participated in several professional and academic associations including American Association for the Advancement of Science, IEEE, American Psychological Association, Association for Computing Machinery, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Association of Systems Management. He was a founding member of the American Entrepreneurs Association. He particularly enjoyed his membership in the International Platform Association, America's most distinguished speakers association founded by Daniel Webster himself. The National Honors Institute sponsored by Harvard University recognized Ray with its "Outstanding Scholar of the Year" award. The ABI Board of International Research nominated Ray as its "Most Distinguished Man of the Decade" for his influence in the professions and his commitment to deeds that "motivate others to strive for excellence in their own professional lives".
The International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England nominated Ray for its Man of Achievement" honor. The American Biographical Institute listed Ray in its edition of "5000 Personalities in the World". Ray became an I.B.C. Fellow in 1990. In 1992 the Board of Governors of the New York Academy of Sciences nominated him for membership and the American Biographical Institute recognized Ray as a "Distinguished Leader" for his service to the consulting profession. Ray is listed in more the 20 editions of Who's Who including Who's Who in in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. The California Historical Society nominated Ray for inclusion in its edition of Who's Who in California. In 1992, the Vice President of the World Parliament nominated Ray as a "Knight in the Confederation of Chivalry" to help "build a bridge of friendship across the Continents and Oceans". He is a Fellow of the American Biographical Institute's Advisory Board.
Ray graduated magna cum laude from the New York Institute of Technology. He conducted doctoral research at the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C. The Philosophy Department of the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona awarded Ray a doctoral fellowship to pursue advanced studies in the Philosophy of Science. He holds advanced degrees in several disciplines including the Ph.D. in Behavioral Science and Philosophy of Science, the Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, the Ph.D. with Distinction in Human Science, and is a Th.D. candidate in Christian Spirituality and Theology at the University of South Africa. Ray attained C.Q.A. certification in 1986 and Systems Management certification in 1989.
A person of deep social concern, Ray speaks often on the problems facing the elderly in these quickly changing times. In the 1980s, he established several health clinics and medical networks dedicated to ensuring the nutrition of the aged and infirm. He initiated a program to influence the American Medical Association to include health maintenance and disease prevention as a major area of concern for its members. For private and government agencies, Ray spoke throughout Florida on the health, nutrition, preventive care and plight of the aging. In California, Ray and his wife combat the isolation of those in nursing and retirement homes by addressing their spiritual needs. They also sponsored International Fellowships to assist individuals in the Philippines and countries of the former Soviet Union to attend scientific and technical seminars in the U.S. and Europe.
Ray's experiences are as eclectic as they are broad. Ray advocates the intellectual, physical, and spiritual growth of the person. He studied philosophy as a Benedictine Monk in Siena, Italy, worked as a deck hand on a Dutch freighter, and studied theology as a Franciscan Friar in Washington, D.C. He participated for many years with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) both as a competitor and supporter. During his athletic career, Ray attained international ranking in competitive Olympic-style Weightlifting in which he won many awards and set a number of records, some of which still stand today. Most recently, Ray became the Pacific Weightlifting Association's Masters Level Champion. Ray maintains international ranking in the Masters Division of Olympic-style Weightlifting. His friend Don Weideman tells Ray that he is "the best weightlifter in the world that nobody ever heard of".
